List of living cardinals
The following is a ''sortable'' list of living cardinals in the Catholic Church. For example, to see the cardinals listed alphabetically by country, click on the box at the top of the "Country" column. Cardinals aged over 80 years on the day the Papacy falls vacant cannot participate in the Papal conclave, so those born before could not participate if the Papacy fell vacant today.
The indication of "country" is that given by the press office of the Holy See "according to nations".〔(List of Cardinals according to Nations and in order of Age )〕
The person who has been a cardinal the longest is Paulo Evaristo Arns, who was elevated by Pope Paul VI on 5 March 1973.
New cardinals were created most recently on 14 February 2015.
As of 24 October 2015:
* there are 218 cardinals, 118 of whom would be eligible to vote if the papacy fell vacant today. There are two living former cardinals: Joseph Ratzinger and Jorge Mario Bergoglio were cardinals prior to their elections as Popes Benedict XVI and Francis in 2005 and 2013, respectively.
* Keith O'Brien is the only cardinal under the age of 80 not eligible to vote at a papal conclave. Though he retains his title, he renounced the rights and privileges of a cardinal on 20 March 2015.
* Santos Abril y Castelló was the last cardinal to turn 80 on 21 September 2015
* Roger Mahony will be the next cardinal to turn 80 on 27 February 2016
* Ján Chryzostom Korec was the last cardinal to die on 24 October 2015
==Cardinals by continent==
Countries with more than one cardinal eligible to vote if the papacy were to fall vacant today are Italy (25), the United States (9), France (5), India (5), Brazil (4), Germany (4), Poland (4), Spain (4), Canada (3), Mexico (3), Argentina (2), Nigeria (2), the Philippines (2) and Portugal (2). Those 14 countries would account for 74 cardinal-electors. Another 44 cardinals would each be his country's sole cardinal-elector.
